What is it that draws us to the waters? We want to feel it on our face as a boat crashes through the waves. We want the comfort of listening to it late at night. We want to be in it and we want to escape and soar above. The seas are ever changing, and so it is no wonder why photographers feel most at peace when photographing the waters.
From 1903-1909, Ralph Vaughan Williams worked intermittently on a series of songs for chorus and orchestra that were to become his most lengthy project to date and his first true symphony. Originally titled The Ocean, A Sea Symphony was first performed in 1910 at the Leeds Festival on the composer's 38th birthday.
At approximately 70 minutes, A Sea Symphony is the longest of all Vaughan Williams’ symphonies. Although it represents a departure from the traditional Germanic symphonic tradition of the time, it follows a fairly standard symphonic outline: fast introductory movement, slow movement, scherzo, and finale. The four movements are:
A Song for All Seas, All Ships

On the Beach at Night: Alone
The Explorers

Ever wonder while you are thumbing through the photo albums ... where's Dad? All of the birthday parties, holiday parties, and family get togethers, and no Dad anywhere in sight.
That's because Dad is always behind the camera; snapping the photos. How nice it would be if Dad was included in the photos.
Let Bob handle the digital photography while Dad handles the grill.

“The virtue of the camera is not the power it has to transform the photographer into an artist, but the impulse it gives him to keep on looking.”
-Brooks Atkinson (1894—1984) U.S. essayist, from Once Around the Sun, 1951

And so, when the impulse strikes, it becomes satisfying to find artistry in the simplest of settings.

Nothing will give you more photo opportunities, than the sky. She will light up, darken her mood, and create magnificent colors; and she will do so on her terms. And, just when you think you have nothing worth grabbing the camera for, be patient. And in a moment or two, her entire personality can change, making you wonder why you even doubted.
